We’ve found that lower yardage is easier to fold, wear, and manage. For most men, the 5-yard option provides the best balance of comfort, appearance, and ease of use.
For those with a waist size above approximately 46 inches, the 6-yard option offers additional coverage and a better overall fit.

Great kilts—also known as the Féileadh Mòr, belted plaid, or great plaid—are long lengths of fabric traditionally worn before the modern tailored kilt. They are hand-pleated by the wearer and secured with a belt or strap while the fabric is laid out, reflecting the earliest form of Highland dress. This style predates sewn pleats, buckles, and straps, and remains popular today for historical wear, reenactment, and traditional Highland presentation. These great kilts are made from 100% woolen wool using double-width 54" fabric, are available in multiple tartans, offered in 5- or 6-yard lengths, and feature fringed ends for an authentic finish.
Sizing recommendation: higher yardage is not always better. For most wearers, a 5-yard great kilt works extremely well and is the easiest option to pleat, wear, and manage. A 6-yard great kilt is typically only recommended for larger individuals, generally those with waist measurements over 46 inches, where the additional fabric provides better coverage and fit.
This listing is for our in stock great kilts. We can order lots of different tartans in our special order listing.
