How to measure for a special order traditional kilt Made in Scotland

For Men's or Women's Kilts

Do not use previous kilt sizing or pant sizing to order.  Whether it is your first time or 10th time ordering a kilt, you want to measure as if it was the 1st.

Sizing / Measuring

It is extremely important you follow our measuring video and order the size you need based on your measurement, not pants size. All of men's pants are labeled 2-4 inches smaller than what they actually measure. Please see our measuring video below or checkout or measuring page here.

The size that you choose for your order will be the middle setting on the buckle straps (i.e. a size 36 adjusts up to just over 37.5 and down to just below 34.5). We recommend ordering the size you measure.

You MUST measure in order to get the correct size. DO NOT use your pants or jeans size to determine your kilt size.

Length Measurement:

This really is personal preference.  While some say that a kilt, traditionally speaking, should come to high knee, we firmly believe that you should order what is comfortable.  A good rule we recommend following if you are new to kilts is going with what your current pair of shorts are.  If they are high, mid, or low knee, use them to figure out how long you want it and measure to that point.

Returns

If you follow our measuring video in the videos section below, you will get a kilt that fits.  Because this is a custom order item it is not eligible for returns or exchanges due to mis-measuring.

How to measure for a kilt with out measuring the waist.

We DO NOT recommend ordering a special order kilt without measuring.  Because these are not eligible for returns, if you get the incorrect size, you will end up with a kilt that you can't return and possibly not be able to use.

⚠️ Pants size is not kilt size — you must measure.
Most sizing issues come from using jean size or guessing. Follow the measuring video above to ensure the correct fit.

Sizing & Measuring – You must measure before ordering. Do not use your pants or jean size. Most men’s pants are labeled 2–4 inches smaller than the actual waist measurement. Follow our measuring video to determine your correct size. The size selected will be the middle setting of the buckle straps (for example, a size 36 adjusts slightly up and down from that point). Order the size you physically measure.

Length – Length is personal preference. While traditional kilts are often worn at high knee, we recommend choosing what feels right to you. A simple guide is to measure to the same point your current shorts fall—high, mid, or low knee—and order accordingly.

Balanced Weight. Traditional Construction. Built for Everyday Wear.

Expertly made in Glasgow from authentic Scottish-woven worsted wool, this 5-yard kilt offers a traditional build with a comfortable weight suited for regular wear. The pleating creates a traditional appearance with lighter, easier movement, making it a versatile choice for both events and day-to-day use. Worsted wool provides a smooth finish that resists wrinkling while holding its shape throughout the day. Constructed using traditional methods, it features a selvedge edge (not hemmed), full internal lining for structure and comfort, a double-fringed front apron, and three traditional leather buckle closures—two on the right hip and one on the left—for a secure, adjustable fit. Belt loops are included to properly accommodate a kilt belt and sporran as part of a complete Highland outfit.

Common Questions About This Kilt

Is a 5-yard kilt a good middle option?
Yes. It offers a balance between weight and movement, making it suitable for both events and regular wear. It provides a traditional look without the full weight of an 8-yard kilt.

When should I choose a 5-yard kilt?
Choose a 5-yard kilt if you want a versatile option that works for a wide range of occasions. It’s well-suited for those who want a traditional feel with a more comfortable, manageable weight.

What’s the difference between 4, 5, and 8 yard kilts?
The difference is the amount of fabric used. More yardage creates deeper pleats and a fuller swing. A 4-yard is lighter and more casual, a 5-yard is balanced, and an 8-yard is the most traditional.

Matching Accessories

If you plan to order matching flashes, a fly plaid, or a ladies’ sash, we recommend adding them at the same time to ensure fabric consistency. Later orders may not be from the same dye lot.
